March/April1998
Some DQ Listers began to be concerned that the news we’d heard from Jane Seymour (about the unofficial word from TPTB that Dr. Quinn was set to be renewed) was contraindicated by press reporting on Les Moonves' highlighting how the men were watching new CBS sports coverage.
In response to this concern, the List stepped up the contacts to TPTB and sponsors, voicing our support for the show’s renewal. Phone numbers and email addresses were posted again, as were various websites with contact info.
In the meantime we continued reviewing episodes, posting articles, discussing various topics, and writing and sharing new fan fiction. We were trying to keep being the social network we so enjoyed.
Then Joe Lando was seen on Regis and Kathie Lee with his shorn locks! It was a shock to the fans, and some Listers chuckled over a return to discussions on Sully’s hair, but many were concerned that it was a very bad sign for the future of the show.
Saturday, May 16, 1998 - “A New Beginning” aired at 8 pm. It was written to be the last episode of Season 6, but it turned out to be the LAST episode of the entire Dr. Quinn series.
Sunday, May 17, 1998 - A flurry of episode reviews was posted to the DQMW-List.
Monday, May 18, 1998 - First posts of the day were more episode reviews of “A New Beginning.” Then a newspaper article was shared:
“… in this morning's Plain Dealer from Cleveland, OH, there are 5 web sites reviewed by reporter Chuck Melvin… ‘a fan-created DQ site is one of the 5 profiled today: Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman http://www.destny.com/drquinn …” The review gave it a top rating. (The creator of this DQMW website, became a DQ campaign leader; this website was critical in our coalition!)
5:06 pm ET
A DQ Lister received word from a source in New York City, that in a day or so, CBS was going to announce in the trade magazines that DQMW was being CANCELLED.
“MY SOURCE ASKED THAT WE IMMEDIATELY START CALLING MEL KARMAZIN at 212-314-9201…” (In April,1998, Mel Karmazin, top shareholder, had become the new President and COO of CBS Corporation.)
Within minutes, the DQ List began doing what it had prepared to do…
