MTM's distribution execs are flying high over "The Cape," the NASA-inspired firstrun action series that to date has cleared 26 of the top 30 markets nationwide, including all of the top 10...
The division's biggest money makers have been the off-network hits "Rescue 911," which is in its third year of domestic syndication through MTM, and "America's Funniest Home Videos." MTM also has nabbed firstrun rights to "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman," which already has racked up a 75% clearance rate nationwide...
The early response to "Dr. Quinn," however, exceeded even Larsen's expectations. He became interested in the hour drama while looking around for an off-network program that could be offered as a talk show alternative. "Sitting and talking to stations, we sensed that this talkshow phenomenon was going to blow up in everybody's faces pretty quickly," he says. "So when CBS asked if anyone was interested (in "Dr. Quinn") we looked at it and said, "Wow, that's about all there is."...
He anticipates a 95% clearance for "Dr. Quinn" by the time the show hits the air in September. "We really have the only off-network show there, so I think it's going to clean up," he says.
MTM was able to grab "Dr. Quinn" before the recent changes in the financial interest and syndication rules.
